What after B.Tech?
This is a question faced by more than 70% of bachelor’s studying various disciplines of Engineering, be it Electrical Engineering or Civil Engineering. There is a plethora of options available that answers this question. One of which is Masters in Technology or M.Tech. There are a lot of question marks as you read more on the topic hence we’ll clear the air with some very fundamental details you should know about M.Tech.

M.Tech/M.E or M.S? What is the difference?
Masters in Technology/Engineering and MS are essentially two similar areas where you choose an area for specialization and work/study on it. The difference between the two is that M.Tech is a course like B.Tech meanwhile M.S gives more focus on research. M.Tech is strictly a 2 year course meanwhile M.S can go longer given your topic for research. You complete M.Tech and go for jobs meanwhile after M.S you can focus on research and pursue PhD rather than go for jobs. Of course, one cannot be put above the other but there is a clear difference as in M.Tech you ace exams while for M.S you have to get research papers done and published.
Do/Do Not when going for Masters.
* Course - Masters differs from bachelors in the sense that you don’t specialize in a course. Hence when you are going for masters you should not choose a course or specialization that is based upon external influences, say what your friend says. Go through the course catalog, content the facilities, the resources before choosing a specialization.
* University - Do thorough research before you apply for any course at a given university. There might be a better course available or there might be something better you like. Choosing a university is as important as choosing the course. You should not make the decision too hastily.
* Admission - Admission procedures, especially if it's to a foreign university, is long and tedious procedure. Keep in mind of all the deadlines given by the university, their entrance criteria and such as each of these differ from country to country. The same can be said for the duration of the course (1-2 years). Plus, universities abroad would require scores for language tests (Like IELTS or TOEFL), hence it would be wise to start prepping for this early enough and not rush everything last minute.

* Documents - This range from language tests to visas to scholarships. None of these would have their deadlines very close to end line and would have opened their portals way beforehand. Especially in the case of scholarships, they come out well before 6 months of the actual admission. Thus documentation and application should be done well in advance and not kept for last minute. Same goes for getting letters of recommendation if those are necessary.
M.Tech in India OR Abroad?
M.Tech is a common term for students in India, but when you go abroad it’s terms as Master in Engineering or MS in engineering. Well, the course specifications are limited to what the university can provide so when going for specialization what is needed is to focus on how good the course is. Don’t choose a university solely because of its reputation. Sometimes their reputation comes from a course that is not what you want. As for M.Tech in India, you can get into any IIT’s, NIT’s or any other national institutions that provide a wide variety of specifications. This is usually taken via the GATE examination. As for studies abroad you can write GRE exams with language tests. In either case, there are various scholarships available based on your marks.
In India, top scorers of GATE are provided with scholarships. There are other grants/schemes available too, based on various other factors. When going abroad, different countries have different schemes when it comes to scholarships. Again, exam scores and grants you can apply for exists. This varies from country to country.
This is a mere common outlook into M.Tech and what it entails. Each of the M.Tech stream is very different in their own way and has different opportunities and universities that provide them.
